⭐ However, I can’t give it more than 7/10 stars for how they teach because science-backed Sage Journals research shows that kids aged 3 to 8 need a more customized and individual approach. 

We’ve yet to figure out how effective its learning method really is (keep reading, I’ll be covering that below as well!), but a solo-learning automated tool might not be the best option for early readers unless you, as parents, would like to spend some useful time with your kiddo.

My experience with this app leaves room for improvement. I must say that it looks quite spotty. It also works one day, and the next it doesn’t. It’s all pretty disappointing, especially given not the cheapest price paid for the app. 

What do parents say about Hooked on Phonics? Pretty much the same as I do. For example, look at this Trustpilot review:

But hold on, we’re talking about very young kids – engagement during learning is a must for them, isn’t it? Or, a bit older review (although it doesn’t look like things have changed a lot since then), highlighting troubles with mere usability.

I can’t help mentioning its practice packs here because they are an important part of the learning process at Hooked on Phonics, and whether or not all is good with them matters as well.

Again, for all fairness, though, families who had no issues with delivery did enjoy the packs. Just keep in mind that troubles with delivery happen (that wasn’t the only instance), and if they do, fixing that would cost you some time and money.

It’s not only that bugs and issues happen sometimes. I presume even more disappointment users find in unresponsiveness to customer feedback and no usability changes following.

What do you look at when it comes to effectiveness? I guess that, as parents, you look at two things. First is whether your child will actually want to do it. And second, will it work for them at their specific speed? 

As for the ‘fun factor’, to keep children engaged and willing to learn, as we’ve already seen in the above-mentioned reviews of Hooked on Phonics, they tried hard, but it didn’t work for everyone. Employing a mix of catchy music videos, silly sound effects, and colorful games is a good idea. Rewarding kids afterward with virtual stars and trophies as they go, as well as finishing a lesson with a ‘celebration’, is even better! 

Therefore, regardless of several complaints, according to Trustpilot, it did prove effective for most families. 

Next, because it’s self-paced, there’s no pressure to keep up with a classroom schedule. If a child takes it all in stride, they can move right along. But if your child is still struggling after a few months of consistent HOP use, it might be a sign they need a more specialized program or a 1-on-1 tutor who can adapt to their specific needs.

That’s where many other online tools fail. Except for Hooked on Phonics. Surprisingly enough, although I did stumble upon several bad experiences, most users still praise this program for its exceptional and extremely helpful customer care.
