Estimation involves rounding up numbers so that it’s easier to compute them. Instead of providing a precise result, an approximate prediction is made by rounding up numbers and making computations more manageable. For instance, to solve the problem 73.14 x 10.29, you can estimate first to the nearest tens. So, the new question will be 70 × 10 = 700.

    Steps in Estimation

Estimation can prove to be beneficial to kids. Once you’ve decided on a number to estimate or round, the first step is locating the digit corresponding to the desired rounding point.

Then, to determine the direction of the turn, check the number immediately to the right of that spot. Your number stays the same if the digit to the right is four or less, like 4, 3, 2, 1, 0.

If the preceding digit is five or higher, for example, 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, a one-digit increment is applied to your number.
