Based on popular reviews for Wyzant, such as general user opinions from TrustPilot, Wyzant reviews on Reddit, and other platforms. Plus, my experience as a Math Tutor, I can give the platform a 5.5/10

Wyzant review: How does Wyzant work?

Wyzant, formed in 2005, is an educational marketplace with thousands of registered tutors. They specialize in various fields and subjects, ranging from traditional academic disciplines, such as mathematics, to vocational skills like crocheting.

Wyzant takes learning a step further by allowing users to conduct background checks on tutors and arrange in-person, one-on-one sessions if both the user and the tutor agree. 

Wyzant’s primary target is high schoolers or adults who want to learn a skill, subject, or concept but don’t have the time or cannot do it alone. The user can filter by topic of interest, tutor experience, age, and hourly rates.

Here, you will find answers to questions such as “Does Wyzant have good tutors?” and “Can I trust Wyzant?” 

This article is an unbiased Wyzant tutors review. Therefore, I’ll rate the platform’s features, learning approach, user experience, effectiveness, customer support, and pricing.

Benefit #1: Diverse subject options

Wyzant is structured to cater to students with various needs, ranging from different and distinct subjects, whether academic-related or otherwise, in the United States and other parts of the world. This makes it possible to learn multiple things on the same platform. Below is what one Wyzant review says:

 

⭐️ By offering learners this feature, it is easy to learn various topics from different tutors, all on the same platform. However, the abundance of options might overwhelm learners, and beginners might struggle to find the right starting point. This is 7/10 for me.

Benefit #2: Dedicated tutors

Wyzant urges competition among tutors because the more qualified tutors are more likely to receive student requests to work with them. This makes it possible for students to get the best learning experience.

⭐️ This is a handy feature that Wyzant offers, as students can choose their own tutor and opt for the most qualified in their subject of interest. Plus, you can filter by  Wyzant tutors reviews from past students. Yet, the striving among tutors to appear as highly skilled as possible to get more work may lead to some faking their qualifications. Therefore, it’s a 6/10 for me.

Benefit #3: No upfront fees

Wyzant protects users from making bad investments by giving the first lesson for free. This allows the user to determine whether the tutor is right for the learner, if they want to proceed with this subject, and so on.

⭐️This feature is outstanding because it lets you know what to expect before you invest. However, the first lesson alone may not be a good yardstick for judging how other lessons may go, especially in some subjects like language, where progress builds over time. In my opinion, Wyzant receives a rating of 6/10 in this regard.

What are the disadvantages of using Wyzant? 

Some users agree that the platform meets some of its objectives. However, there are negative reviews for Wyzant tutoring services, and here are some of them:

Cons #1: Poor customer service

Wyzant reviews by students demonstrate that Wyzant fails to provide quick and satisfactory customer help when needed. This causes unscrutinized behavior from some tutors. Additionally, users may struggle to find help when it is needed on short notice.

However, unlike Wyzant, platforms like Brighterly provide users with immediate and helpful customer assistance whenever required. 

Brighterly understands the need to address and satisfy customer needs promptly, so users are advised to contact the Brighterly customer support team immediately when issues arise, such as if a tutor is late for classes. The user will receive adequate feedback within 12 hours.

Cons #2: Badly recorded lessons

One of Wyzant’s unique features is the ability to offer recorded sessions, allowing students to revisit and benefit from previous lessons. Wyzant review complaints include that the recorded lessons are of poor quality, which defeats the purpose of returning to learn from them.

However, with Brighterly’s math program, the student and tutor follow a flexible schedule that allows both parties to maximize the lesson time. This encourages full concentration and participation to ensure that the student does not forget anything from previous classes.

Cons #3:  Fake qualifications

Some Wyzant reviews report that the platform fails to properly vet tutors on what they say their qualifications and certifications are. This allows malicious tutors to claim to be something they aren’t. It can cost more than money, but also valuable users’ time. 

Brighterly does not have this problem. Each tutor in Brighterly must undergo a thorough vetting process to confirm their identity. The platform also authenticates the qualifications and certificates prospective tutors submit. Each tutor also has a different skill level, meaning there are tutors specially for first graders, second graders, and so on.

Wyzant parents & kids reviews: Effectiveness of the learning approach.

The Wyzant learning approach is pretty straightforward. The idea is to provide users with a single platform to learn a wide variety of subjects from the comfort of their own homes. If that doesn’t suffice, a learner can plan a one-on-one offline meeting with the tutor to have lessons, provided the tutor is nearby. According to reviews for Wyzant tutoring services, the platform is an excellent resource for learning niche topics, such as how to use the Dreamweaver tool or play basketball. 

The platform also allows users to choose their tutors based on whatever criteria they see fit. This allows the user to select the seemingly most suitable option based on previous reviews on Wyzant about their tutoring services. Additionally, before the user attends an offline face-to-face meetup, it is recommended that they first conduct a background check on the tutor, a service that Wyzant itself offers.

However, Wyzant charges an extra $15.99 fee for background checks. The plus side is that a tutor can be removed from the platform if suspicious activity is detected, such as refusal to undergo a background check. Yet, after this, Wyzant does not take responsibility for what happens during offline meetups. 

The tutor determines the most effective form of learning, depending on the area of interest. After all, the platform is home to numerous subjects so a one-size-fits-all approach won’t cut it.

⭐️Generally, I’d say Wyzant is the right option for learning specialised areas of interest, especially those that may not be very common. However, with the fees, inadequate customer service, and safety concerns, I’d give it a 5/10.

Wyzant reviews: User interface and experience

Wyzant’s UI is uncomplicated and easy to navigate for new users. The tagline particularly caught my eye: “Yep, you can learn that”. It captures what Wyzant sells: the idea that you can find a tutor for anything.

When you click the “find a tutor” option, it takes you to a page where you choose the topic you want to learn, and then a search result of multiple tutors for that subject. It’s pretty easy to start getting lessons on the platform. 

After signing up, students are given a dedicated dashboard for learning, communicating with their tutor through chat, and more.

However, the user interface and experience when you do start receiving lessons is a different matter. 

According to Wyzant tutoring reviews on Reddit, one user claims that the platform’s screen-sharing and whiteboard features are quite buggy, which interferes with the quality of lessons. “I use Vibe and screen sharing through Zoom,” they said, while describing Wyzant’s UI and UX quality for lessons.

Wyzant employs a simple, straightforward design that makes it easy for users to navigate, find their subjects of interest, and select desired tutors in a few minutes. However, the platform fails to deliver the same seamless user experience during lessons.

Wyzant reviews by students: Platform’s effectiveness

Wyzant fulfils its promise as an online platform for learning anything. You can meet up for a live session with the tutor if online learning doesn’t work for you. As users have reported in many Wyzant reviews, the tutors at Wyzant are dedicated and work hard to ensure that students understand the concepts taught.

The autonomy to choose your tutors is one of the reasons why Wyzant is a top platform among customers. This is an uncommon feature among online tutoring sites, and you can also leave them a review. Many users have experienced satisfaction with the tutors they select for themselves.

However, we can’t measure the platform’s effectiveness primarily on the expertise of the individual tutors alone. While most tutors make it work, some users agree that Wyzant’s software significantly hinders smooth and efficient learning.

Rating:⭐️ 7/10 

Over the years, Wyzant has managed to attract and become a hub of expert tutors prepared to provide students with high-quality education. Nonetheless, due to the software’s malfunctions, learning can be a bit more challenging than it needs to be.

Other online learning platforms like Brighterly don’t face the same issues as they give priority to features that enable cohesive online learning.  

Wyzant review: Connect support

According to the reviews on Wyzant, the majority of Wyzant customers who have had reason to contact the help center agree that the customer support is less than satisfactory. 

Users pay according to what the specific tutor charges, and since Wyzant doesn’t operate on pricing plans, there is no separate customer service available regardless of how much users spend.

Wyzant offers a customer help line, FAQs, and an email to contact support, which is unfortunately lacking in terms of immediacy and helpfulness.

This isn’t always the case for online learning platforms. Brighterly’s customer service, for instance, has been reviewed as helpful and satisfactory.

Wyzant pricing: Value for money?

Wyzant is very flexible about pricing. The students are charged according to the tutor’s hourly rate. However, Wyzant also adds a 9% service fee, which the user pays, and a 25% fee, which is deducted from the tutor’s earnings.

However, the platform does provide students with a free first lesson to determine if the arrangement with a particular tutor works.

How much does Wyzant cost?

Wyzant doesn’t have a definitive cost except what the tutor sets. However, with the 25% charge on tutors and 9% charge on students, if a tutor charges $25 per hour, the student will pay $27.25 per hour. The tutor, on the other hand, receives $18.75 per hour.

From this, it is easy to see how factors like the 25% fees on tutors affect pricing. Some other factors may include:

The effect of these fees and the unregulated cost of tutors has caused some users to experience buyer’s remorse, as we can see in some Wyzant online tutoring reviews:
