Rounding to the nearest ten requires looking to the right of the tenths place, which is the hundredths place. The digit in the tenths place must be added by one if the digit in the hundredths place is greater than 5. Tenths place digits remain the same if they are below or equal to 4. To the right of the tenth place, all digits should be 0’s. Whenever we round off a number to the nearest tenth, we stop at the tenth place.

To make sure it’s nothing difficult to round each number to the nearest 10, let’s do some practice. When 7.57 is rounded to 7.6, the digit in the hundredth place is 7, which is greater than 5. In the same way, 3.592 would be rounded to 3.6, since the hundredth is greater than five.

Let’s consider the case where the hundredth place digit is 4 or less. 

For instance, 25.22 would be 22 rounded to the nearest ten because the hundredths place digit is 2, which is less than five. 

How to round to the nearest tenth?

We need to follow a certain set of rules when rounding to nearest tenth:

• Observe the number that needs to be rounded. In the tenth place, this is the number immediately following the decimal point.
• As you mark the digit at the tenths place, observe the digit at the ‘hundredths’ place, which lies to the right.
• When the hundredths place digit is less than 5, the tenths place digit remains unchanged, and we write 0 in the hundredth place and in all places around it.
• It is correct to write 0 in all the digits to the right of the hundredths place if the digit in the hundredths place is greater than 5.  Tenths are increased by one.

As an example:

• Let’s say you weigh 54.2 kg. To make it easier for others to understand your weight, use rounding numbers to the nearest 10, so you can round it up to 54 kilograms.
• The length of a piece of wood is 1.568 meters. To simplify calculations, a contractor might round this to 1.6 meters when ordering supplies.
• Let’s say you earn $3,790,50 per month. You might round your salary to $3,800 when planning a budget or discussing it with family.

Example 1: The price of the book is 13.2$. What is the price of the book if we round it to the nearest ten?

Solution:
The ones digit is 2.
Since 2 is less than 5, round down.
So, 13,2 becomes 13 when rounded to the nearest ten.

Example 2: Round to nearest tenth the number 16,5.

Solution:
Check the ones digit: 5.
If a number ends in 5, you should always round it up to the next highest value.
Therefore, 16,5 rounds to 17.

Example 3: Alice drove 258.9 miles to reach his sister’s house. What can we get if we round the distance to the nearest tens?

Solution:
The ones digit is 9.
Since 9 is greater than 5, round up.
258 becomes 260.

Example 4: You keep in your hand a pencil that is 15.76 cm long. How do you round to the nearest tenth the length to the nearest cm?

Solution:
The ones digit is 6.
Since 6 is more than 5, round up.
So, 15.76 becomes 15.8.
