    What are prime factors?

Prime factors are numbers that can only be divided by themselves and 1. This means they have no other factors themselves. Prime factors can also be factors of larger numbers, and using factor trees is a great way to identify a number’s prime factors.

    Prime factorization trees

Prime factorization trees can help us identify prime factors or a given number. First, you write your number down at the top of your tree, then draw two lines – aka branches – down. Here, you’ll write two factors that aren’t the number itself or 1. If that number is a prime factor – i.e. it can only be divided by itself or 1 – you would draw a circle around it and stop adding branches.

If your number has more factors, draw another branch under it and continue the process until you reach a prime factor!
