Marjorie Alvarez Reaño’s Experience Before Brighterly
Before she joined the Brighterly team, Marjorie worked offline as a math teacher, conducting group and 1:1 lessons for students from elementary through college. Marjorie supported students with various tasks, tracked their progress, and held regular parent-teacher sessions to provide feedback.
Now, as part of the Brighterly team, she’s using her expertise to connect with students and help them grow in math.
“I decided to join Brighterly because it allows conceptual understanding, not just drills. ”
In math, you can’t just tell students “That’s just the rules”. What I do is I explain why maths concepts work the way they work, as many times as the student needs. We tailor our plans as needed and use a variety of representations and approaches. So, students build flexible ways of thinking and progress fast.
Current Activities and Approach to Students
Marjorie has been teaching for 11 years and is committed to offering students learning experiences where they can feel empowered and grow. She identifies learning gaps from the first lesson and works to address them through teaching strategies tailored to each student. Marjorie helps students with homework, school assignments, and test prep, based on each student’s requirements.
As a Brighterly tutor, Marjorie applies her knowledge and experience to help children finally feel confident in their math abilities. She is dedicated to making students understand math on a deeper level than a textbook can explain. She believes:
- Every student is capable of understanding math if we find the correct approach for them.
- Not every student is a “math person”. But they absolutely have what it takes to ace math tests!
“I find real fulfillment in seeing students grow in confidence and think independently.”
Every student is capable. What can be missing is patience, confidence, and a friendly tutor. This is where I come in.
As an experienced tutor, Marjorie knows how important it is for students to feel good about math. She continues to expand her expertise and explore new teaching approaches as she holds several classes a day.
